The founding of the Musée des Sept-Îles, in 1975, was a major milestone in the evolution of visual arts and the protection of the Côte-Nord’s heritage. Initially established within the walls of the Vieux-Poste historical site, it then moved into a new building and was opened to the public on September 29th, 1986. Its regional focus was confirmed once it became the Musée régional de la Côte-Nord in the early 1990s.

History

In 1975, the Corporation du Musée des Sept-Îles was created by artist André Michel. As early as the autumn of 1976, the Musée opened its doors on the Vieux-Poste site, under the name of the Musée des Sept-Îles. Ten years later, on September 29th, 1986, it moved into a new building in downtown Sept-Îles and its focus became regional. It was then renamed to the Musée régional de la Côte-Nord. Thanks to its infrastructure, which allowed it to preserve, curate and showcase the Côte-Nord’s heritage, it became a public service third place for the local population.

Collections
The Vieux-Poste site was seeing 5,000 visitors per year. The goal of curation was to preserve collections with a strong Côte-Nord identity. They were quickly growing (art, ethnology, archaeology…). Efforts were being made with the provincial government to repatriate an archaeological collection originating from René Lévesque’s illegal digs on the Côte-Nord. To meet museum conservation standards, a new space with storerooms was required.
New building at 500 Laure Boulevard
The Parti québécois confirmed funding for the capital project to build the Musée. René Lévesque was Premier at the time.
Meanwhile in Sept-Îles – A political issue
The Parti libéral assumed power. Robert Bourassa was elected Premier, and Lise Bacon, Deputy Premier, was appointed Minister of Cultural Affairs. She halted all construction projects. Meanwhile, in Sept-Îles, André Michel decided to push ahead with the construction work, without financing. “I told all the contractors, continue building, because we’re in the middle of nowhere. If you stop now, we’ll never have a museum. And those people kept pushing onward till the end.” – André Michel
Unblocking the project
André Michel paid a visit to the ministère du Revenu to amend the corporation’s letters patent regarding the value of real estate it owned (from $100,000 to $5,000,000), allowing the construction project to be unblocked
Completion of the new building
The Musée officially moved to 500 Boulevard Laure, Sept-Îles.

Mission

The mission of the Musée de la Côte-Nord (MCN) is to protect, curate, study, disseminate and showcase the Côte-Nord’s heritage in the fields of ethnohistory, archaeology and natural sciences.
It also acts as a disseminator of visual arts, showcasing the work of Côte-Nord artists, and as a resource museum for other Côte-Nord organizations.
The Musée de la Côte-Nord also operates the Vieux-Poste de Sept-Îles site, property of the Ville de Sept-Îles.

Values

In pursuing its mission, the Musée de la Côte-Nord intends to promote the values of commitment, openness, expertise and professionalism.

Two accredited museum institutions.

The Musée de la Côte-Nord and the Vieux-Poste de Sept-Îles are two accredited museum institutions (2018, renewal in 2024)  among the eight currently listed on the Côte-Nord. The accreditation of museum institutions in Québec, delivered by the ministère de la Culture et des Communications on behalf of the gouvernement du Québec, guarantees public access to a high-quality public interest establishment. This is in line with internationally recognized practices in terms of museology practices and heritage protection and promotion.
