Metamorphosis
Art exhibit by Lorraine Dagenais
Painting, reliefs and mixed media

The Musée de la Côte-Nord is proud to present an art exhibit by Lorraine Dagenais, titled Metamorphosis, from February 22 to May 22, 2024. A happy hour opening event will be hosted on the evening of Thursday, February 22, with the artist in attendance.

First hosted in Amos, Abitibi, Metamorphosis was exhibited in 2022 at the Amos exhibition centre. After a few months’ delay, it finally comes to Sept-Îles. The exhibit is built on our relationship with nature, and the artist wishes to highlight the contrast between the dense forests of Amos and the proximity of Sept-Îles to the sea. Two years and 1300 km later, the exhibit ends its long journey here, within the walls of the Musée de la Côte-Nord.

Reappropriating a distant nature
Lorraine Dagenais is fascinated by the entanglement, balance and harmony of proportions found in nature. Through them, a specific, repetitive and unique code is created. These components are constructed and deconstructed in a complex relationship that, on many levels, achieves mathematical, philosophical or spiritual rigour.
In her work, the artist blends matter, form and space. Her approach is expressed across a range of visual media: assemblages, wall installations, and drawings. She mainly uses scraps of machined materials, such as veneer and polyethylene fibres. By mimicking elements from nature, she metamorphoses these common building materials. In this way, her works evoke states of transition (buds and leaves, waves and clouds) that symbolize the reappropriation of a nature that is distant, forgotten, asleep, but above all and more than ever essential.

What’s next?
The journey of the Metamorphosis exhibit comes to an end on May 22, 2024. For her visit on the Côte-Nord, the artist thanks the Conseil des arts et lettres du Québec for the financial aid she received as part of the Circulation of Works Within Québec program. The artist has many projects planned for 2025, including a group exhibition, Éphémères imaginaires, which will be hosted at Galerie Montcalm in Gatineau, as well as a duo exhibition at Galerie L’Onyx in Montreal.
