Description:
Éloïse Lamarre and Raphaëlle Ainsley-Vincent went to meet berry pickers in Tête-à-la-Baleine, Pakua Shipi, Saint-Augustin, and Lourdes-de-Blanc-Sablon on the Lower North Shore (Quebec) to document this practice. “Our approach is similar to picking itself. We followed the bright trail of berries in the bog to harvest their stories.” – Raphaëlle Ainsley-Vincent and Éloïse Lamarre, artists.
Through their photographs and the stories collected from the Coasters, the artists are helping to preserve a living, unifying heritage. With this exhibition, they hope to convey the pride that the Innu, French-speaking, and English-speaking communities of the region have in their know-how and way of life.
The texts and photographs in the exhibition were collected in 2023-2024 “first in the peat bogs, then in the kitchens, pickup trucks, boats, and cottages of the Coasters.” People told them about miraculous harvests of the past, but also about a practice that has been weakened by climate change. The exhibition also showcases historical and archaeological artifacts from the Musée de la Côte-Nord.
Come discover the peat bogs of the Lower North Shore, without the discomfort of black flies.
